What Is IPL?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a non-invasive light-based energy treatment that is used to remove pigment, redness, and hair on the face and body. When used on the face, it is sometimes referred to as Photofacial Rejuvenation. Beach Aesthetics is glad to offer IPL treatments in El Segundo.

Unlike alternative cosmetic options, IPL treatments do not require the use of surgery and lasers. Instead, they make use of broad-spectrum light to safely and effectively address a number of common skin problems.

What Does IPL Treat?

IPL can be used to treat or remove a variety of aesthetic issues, including:

  • Age spots
  • Sunspots
  • Freckles
  • Rosacea
  • Acne
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Angiomas
  • Tiny spider veins
  • Unwanted Hair
  • Uneven Skin Tone

How Does IPL Work?

IPL delivers quick pulses of high energy light directly to the skin. The light energy is converted to heat and is preferentially absorbed by the cells that produce the pigment, redness, or hair which is being targeted, causing them to be eliminated. This treatment also helps to stimulate collagen production, helping to improve skin tone and texture.

A Customized Solution That Fits Your Unique Needs

Since everybody is different, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to performing IPL.  IPL settings are customized for each patient. Characteristics and strength of the light energy that is delivered by IPL treatment are typically altered to suit the individual and condition being treated.  The duration of each treatment, number of sessions, and the areas targeted vary from person to person.

What Areas Can be Treated With IPL?

The treatment can be used on many different areas of the body, including the:

  • Face
  • Neck
  • Chest
  • Hands
  • Shoulders
  • Legs
  • Arms

During your consultation, you will discuss the areas of the body that you would like treated. A customized treatment plan will then be created to suit your individual needs.

What Is an IPL Treatment Like?

Luminous M22 MachineDuring your IPL treatment, cool gel will be applied to the treatment area. Protective eye shields will be placed over your eyes, as the IPL light is very bright. A specialized handpiece will then be glided over your skin, as quick bursts of light energy are delivered to the tissues.

During IPL treatment you will likely feel a light sting or snapping sensation against your skin during each pulse. The duration of the treatment depends on the size of the area but is typically about 20-30 minutes for most applications.

What to Expect After Your IPL Treatment

After the treatment, the gel will be removed from your treatment area. If treatment has been performed over an area that may receive sun exposure, protective sunscreen (SPF 30 or greater) will then be applied to your skin.

Recovery time following IPL treatments is not lengthy. It is common for your skin to be slightly red and to feel warm immediately after treatment like you have a mild sunburn. This should resolve within 24-48 hours. You should avoid vigorous scrubbing of the skin or exfoliation until the redness goes away.

There is no downtime after IPL. You can return to your normal activities, but you should avoid direct sun exposure if possible for a few days.

Results of IPL

Results of IPL begin to be seen soon afterward. Some of the treated skin pigment may turn dark and flake off over the next week or so. If you are having IPL for hair reduction, you will likely see an immediate decrease in the amount of hair that grows back in the treated region.

As you go through a series of IPL treatments, the results you see will continue to improve over time. This is because each treatment can be altered to affect different cells and different depths of the skin. In addition, stimulation of collagen production by IPL improves overall skin tone, with optimal results seen after about 3 months. if you would like to see the results possible through IPL treatments, please visit our before and after gallery.

How Long Will My IPL Results Last?

If you practice a regular skin-care routine, you can maintain the results of your IPL treatment for a long time. The exact duration of results varies from patient to patient. Yearly maintenance treatments are recommended for the best results.

The results of IPL treatment may be short-lived if you aren’t careful about adequate sun protection and staying out of the sun.

How Many IPL Treatments Will I Need?

For best results, a series of IPL treatments are recommended. If you are having treatment for skin pigment, a series of 3 treatments spaced 1 month apart is typical, with 1-2 annual touchup treatments as necessary. If IPL is being done for hair removal, 5-6 treatments are usually necessary, with treatments spaced 1-2 months apart (depending upon the treatment area).

Am I a Good Candidate for IPL?

Before trying a cosmetic treatment by Dr. Rayman, it’s important to understand if you’ll make a good candidate for it. If you are struggling with pigmentation issues, uneven skin tone, or excess hair, this procedure may be a safe and effective option for treating these problems.

It is important to understand that IPL is not the ideal option for everyone. Since the light rays are attracted to pigment, people with tan or darker skin tones can experience skin discoloration with this procedure, and melasma patches may become darker.

However, if you have a lighter skin tone, this treatment can provide you with a significantly improved look that you can enjoy with confidence.  The best way to discover if you are a good candidate for IPL is to come in for a consultation.

How Much Does the IPL Photofacial Treatment Cost?

Since IPL treatment differs from patient to patient, the cost depends upon the size of the area treated and the number of appointments necessary to achieve the best results possible. During your consultation, the exact price of your El Segundo IPL treatment will be discussed.
