If you have varicose veins and are thinking about getting them treated, but are holding off because you can’t afford downtime or don’t want to wear compression stockings after treatment, there is an amazing new treatment that may be just right for you. What is VenaSeal™?

VenaSeal is a simple office based procedure in which a tiny catheter is inserted into the problematic vein and advanced through the abnormal segment under ultrasound guidance. After the tip of the catheter is precisely positioned within the segment of vein to be treated, tiny drops of an FDA approved adhesive glue are deposited into the vein. Pressure is then held over the vein, causing it to seal shut, thereby instantly curing venous insufficiency. The catheter is then removed and a tiny bandage is placed at the skin entry site. The procedure takes about a half hour to complete and requires no downtime afterwards.

What is the Treatment like?

This safe procedure is performed within the office setting and is fast, comfortable, and easy to undergo. During the procedure you are awake and you are able to talk, listen to music and/or play on your phone. Your skin is numbed at the catheter entry site and then the catheter is then passed into the vein. You will then feel occasional pressure being applied to your leg as the vein is sealed shut. In just about a half hour the entire procedure is completed. You are then on your feet and are ready to go about the rest of your day.

What to Expect after VenaSeal™:

There is virtually no downtime after VenaSeal™. At the end of the procedure a tiny bandage is placed at the skin entry site. You are then allowed to ambulate and are literally walking out of the office. There is no need to wear compression stockings after VenaSeal™ and no restrictions on activities. You may notice a pulling sensation over the treated vein for a period of time. Some patients have a little bit of tenderness at the skin entry site, but this typically resolves quickly.

It is important to understand that VenaSeal™ is a procedure that treats the underlying cause of varicose veins by closing the roots of the veins – typically either the great saphenous vein or small saphenous vein. It is not a treatment for the visible varicose veins on the skin surface. While varicose veins may shrink after VenaSeal™, a secondary treatment such as microphlebectomies or ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy may be needed to completely eradicate the visible varicose veins on the skin’s surface. These secondary procedures may be performed on the same date as VenaSeal™ or subsequent to it, depending upon your particular situation, needs and goals.

Advantages of VenaSeal™:

  • Outpatient procedure
  • Only a small amount of local anesthetic is needed at the skin entry site
  • No heat used, minimizing risk to surrounding tissues.
  • No need to wear compression stockings afterwards.
  • Immediate return to normal activities.

Am I a good candidate for VenaSeal™?

If you have visible protruding varicose veins on your legs, you may have an underlying venous abnormality that is treatable by VenaSeal™. Not all patients who have varicose veins are good candidates for VenaSeal™, as many factors come into play, such as which vein is involved, how long is the abnormal segment, insurance coverage, etc. The only way to know is to set up a consult to learn it this is the best treatment for you.
